About the Southern Downs Steam Railway

The Southern Downs Steam Railway Association Inc. (SDSR) is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation based in Warwick, Queensland, proudly operating the Downs Explorer — Queensland’s Premier Heritage Rail Experience.

SDSR delivers unforgettable heritage rail journeys through the spectacular Southern Downs and Granite Belt, using beautifully restored locomotives and historic timber carriages.

At the heart of the experience is the Warwick Railway Station Precinct, a fully restored 1880s sandstone station, now home to:

  • A working heritage railway
  • The Warwick Railway Museum
  • Events, functions, and visitor experiences
  • Visitors can explore the rich history of rail in the region, enjoy guided tours, and step back in time through immersive rail journeys and precinct activities.
